****The Idle Hour Estate was established in 1876 when William K. Vanderbilt purchased 862 acres of land in Oakdale, NY. The site of the estate was chosen to be close to an exclusive hunting club known as the South Side Sportsmen’s Club. (Today this is known as the Connetquot River State Park Preserve.) Over the years, the Idle Hour estate has been home to two mansions and Twenty-nine out buildings. Many of these buildings still stand today. In the intervening years a housing sub -division sprung up between these buildings, giving rise to the Idle Hour neighborhood in Oakdale. ****
